# Step 3: apply a duty factor

The third step adjusts your baseline for how hard the equipment runs.

### Choose a duty factor

| Duty factor | Label            | Choose it when                                                                 |
| ----------- | ---------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| ×0.75       | Spared / standby | The equipment is an installed spare or runs standby duty, at a lower run rate. |
| ×1          | Standard duty    | The equipment runs continuous or normal cycling service. Selected by default.  |
| ×1.5        | Severe service   | The equipment sees abrasive, corrosive or high-cycle duty.                     |

Signal multiplies your baseline by the duty factor you choose.

### Example

A $1,850 baseline across 40 installed assets at standard duty (×1) models to 40 × $1,850 × 1 = $74,000 per year. The same baseline at severe service (×1.5) models to $111,000 per year.
