# Switch between light and dark mode

Switch Signal's color theme to match your preference or your lighting.

### Steps

1. On desktop or tablet, find the theme button in the sidebar footer. On a phone, tap the sun or moon icon in the top bar.
2. Click it. It reads **Dark mode** when Signal is currently light, and **Light mode** when Signal is currently dark. Clicking switches to that mode.

### Notes

* Signal opens in light mode by default.
* Your choice is saved and applies the next time you sign in.
* If you have Signal open in more than one browser tab, switching in one tab switches the others too.
