# Your session and signing out

Signal keeps you signed in across browser restarts so you do not have to sign in every time you open it.

### How your session works

Once you sign in, Signal remembers you on that browser. Closing the tab or restarting your browser does not sign you out.

If your session expires, Signal tries once to refresh it automatically. If that does not work, Signal returns you to the sign-in screen without any error message. Your Microsoft sign-in stays active, so clicking **Continue with Microsoft** again is quick.

### Sign out

1. On desktop or tablet, click **Sign out** at the bottom of the sidebar. On a phone, tap the sign-out icon in the top bar.
2. Signal clears your session and returns you to the sign-in screen.

### Notes

* Signing out of Signal also signs you out of Microsoft. The next sign-in asks for your account and password again.
