# Understand asset status and lifecycle

Signal tracks two separate things about every asset: its operating status (is it running) and its lifecycle stage (is it a draft, active, or archived record). Understanding the difference helps you find assets and read the table correctly.

### Operating status

Every asset has one of six statuses:

| Status                 | Meaning                                         |
| ---------------------- | ----------------------------------------------- |
| **Online**             | Available and operating normally.               |
| **Offline**            | Unavailable or not currently operating.         |
| **Out of Service**     | Intentionally removed from active service.      |
| **Abandoned in Place** | Retired equipment that remains at its location. |
| **Removed**            | Removed from the tracked installation.          |
| **Unknown**            | Operating status has not been confirmed.        |

Each status shows as a colored badge with a dot in the table, the map and the Quick View panel. Any status value that does not match one of the six above also displays and filters as Unknown.

### Lifecycle: draft, active and archived

Separately from operating status, every asset record has a lifecycle stage:

* **Active** assets are the normal, everyday records. Empire View shows active assets by default.
* **Draft** assets are records that have not been confirmed yet. A draft shows a **Draft** pill next to its status badge. Assets uploaded through bulk import may start as drafts. Turn on the **Drafts** toggle in the toolbar to see them.
* **Archived** assets are hidden from Empire View, reports and other parts of Signal by default. Archived rows appear dimmed when you turn on the **Archived** toggle. Archiving does not delete the record; an administrator can restore it later.

The **Drafts** and **Archived** toggles only appear for accounts that can promote or delete assets. If you do not see them, ask your administrator.

### Notes

* Assets you create with the New Asset wizard, and duplicates you create from an existing asset, are always active.
* Archiving hides an asset everywhere in Signal until it is restored, including from reports.
