# Duplicate an asset

Create a copy of an asset with a new serial number. Use this for a near-identical replacement unit instead of building a new asset from scratch.

### Before you begin

If you do not see **Duplicate** in the action bar, your account does not have the permission to edit assets. Ask your administrator.

### Steps

1. Select exactly one asset. **Duplicate** only appears when your selection has one asset in it and that asset is not archived.
2. Click **Duplicate** in the action bar.
3. Signal proposes a new serial number by adding "-COPY" to the end of the original. If an active asset already uses that serial, Signal keeps adding "-COPY" until it finds one that is free.
4. If the proposed serial matches only an archived asset's serial, a **Confirm duplicate serial** dialog opens with a warning. Keep the suggested serial, or edit the field, then click **Duplicate** to continue, or **Cancel** to stop without creating a copy.

Signal creates the copy as an active asset named "{original name} (Copy)" and shows a confirmation message with the new serial number once it finishes.

### Notes

* The copy is always created as active, even if your account does not have the permission to promote assets.
