# Search assets

Use the search box in the Empire View toolbar to quickly narrow the list to a specific asset without opening the filter panel.

### Steps

1. Click the search box, labeled **Search assets...**, at the left of the toolbar.
2. Type your search text. The list updates as you type; you do not need to press Enter.
3. Press Esc, or click the X in the box, to clear your search.

### What you see

Search matches assets whose name, serial number, brand, manufacturer or model code contains your search text, regardless of case. It also matches assets whose bill of materials contains a part number you typed, so you can search by a part number to find every asset that uses it.

### Notes

* On a desktop, an empty search box shows a small **⌘K** button. Click it, or press Ctrl+K (Windows) or Cmd+K (Mac), to open the command palette, a faster way to jump to a specific asset or apply a quick filter. See Use the command palette for details.
* Search combines with any filters you have set in the Filter Builder.
