# Preview, open and download documents

Use these controls to view a document without leaving Signal, open it in its own tab, or save a copy.

### On a phone

Tap a document card. A PDF opens in the inline preview. Any other file type starts a download.

### On a laptop or desktop

Point at a row to reveal its action icons, then choose one:

* **Open in new tab** opens the file in a new browser tab using a temporary link.
* **Download** saves the file. The icon reads "Downloading..." while it works.
* **Edit name and tags** opens the Edit document dialog.
* **Delete** opens the delete confirmation.

### The PDF preview

The preview shows the document title and its page count. Use the **Previous page** and **Next page** arrows to move through the file, or the page indicator to see where you are.

* **Zoom out** and **Zoom in** step by 25%, from 50% up to 300%. Click the percentage between them to reset to 100%.
* On a phone, the page fits the screen width instead of using zoom controls.
* **Download** saves the file. **Close**, or press Escape, to exit the preview.

If the file cannot be previewed, Signal shows "Unable to preview" with the error and a **Download instead** button.

### Notes

**Open in new tab** needs pop-ups allowed in your browser. If they are blocked, Signal shows "Pop-up blocked. Allow pop-ups and try again."
