# Link documents to customers and assets

Attach a document to a customer and to one or more assets so it turns up wherever that customer or asset is reviewed.

### Steps

1. On the upload form or the Edit document dialog, click **Customer (optional)** and choose a customer from the dropdown.
2. Click **Asset Serial Numbers (optional)** and choose one or more serial numbers. Press Enter or a comma to add a chip. Backspace on an empty field removes the last chip.
3. To remove a serial, click its **Remove {serial}** button.

### What you see

Choosing a customer narrows the serial number suggestions to that customer's assets. With no customer chosen, suggestions cover your whole fleet. Changing the customer on the Edit document dialog removes any serial chips that do not belong to the new customer.

### Notes

Signal only accepts serial numbers that already exist in your asset records. If you type a value that does not match an existing asset, Signal ignores it. This keeps a document's links pointing at real assets instead of placeholder text.

If you type text into the Customer field that does not match an existing customer, Signal shows "Pick an item from the dropdown to assign a customer." Choose an option from the list, or clear the field.
