# Edit a document

Change a document's name, type, tags, customer or asset links after it has been uploaded.

### Steps

1. Point at the document's row and click the pencil icon, **Edit name and tags**. On a phone, tap **Edit document**.
2. Update the fields you need to change.
3. Click **Save**.

### Field reference

| Field | Required | What to enter | Notes |
| ------------------------------- | -------- | ---------------------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Name | Yes | The document's display name | |
| Customer (optional) | No | Choose a customer from the dropdown | Typing unmatched text shows "Pick an item from the dropdown to assign a customer." |
| Asset Serial Numbers (optional) | No | Choose one or more existing serial numbers | Changing the customer removes serials that do not belong to it |
| Tags / Types | No | Choose an existing value or type a new one and press Enter | The first chip is the document's type; the rest are tags |

### What you see

The document's type appears as the first chip in **Tags / Types**, in a different color from the other tags. If the type is empty or set to "Other", the next value you type becomes the new type instead of a tag.

If your document is a model manual, its hidden brand and model tags are not shown here, and they are kept when you save.

### Notes

Signal checks your changes before saving. You may see:

* "Document name is required."
* "Select a customer from the dropdown or clear the customer field."
* "Remove serial numbers that do not belong to the selected customer."
* "Select serial numbers from existing options, or clear the serial input."

If saving fails for another reason, Signal shows "Failed to update document." or a message from the server.
