# Customers overview

A customer in Signal is a company that buys or uses equipment through your organization. This page explains how Signal organizes customer data so you know where information comes from before you edit it.

### What counts as a customer

Every company on the customer list is a customer of your organization. When someone with the right access adds a new customer, Signal creates it as a customer of your organization.

### The company, facility, and contact structure

A customer is a company. Under that company are one or more facilities, which are physical locations such as plants or offices. If a customer has no facilities on record, Signal shows one default facility named after the company, and that facility lists all of the customer's assets.

Contacts are people. Each contact belongs either to the company itself (a company-level contact) or to one specific facility.

### Where the data comes from

Signal builds a customer's page from three sources:

* Equipment registered as assets for that customer.
* Spare-parts sales from your organization's sales system, matched to the customer by asset serial number, organization, or name.
* Your organization's price list, used to estimate spare-parts revenue opportunity.

If one of these sources has no data for a customer, the related section on their page shows an empty state instead of a number.

### Where you see it in Signal

You see this structure on the customer list and on each customer's own page, in the Facilities (or Offices) and Contacts sections.

### Notes

* Facilities, offices, and contacts are covered in their own pages in this section.
