# Understand portal status

A customer's portal is always in one of three states, shown as a badge in the header and on the Portal tab.

### The three states

| Status | What it means |
| ------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| No badge, "doesn't have a portal yet" | The customer's account is not active, or a portal has not been launched for it. |
| **Portal: Active** | The portal is live. Customer users who have been invited can sign in. |
| **Portal: Paused** | The portal was launched but access is currently turned off. |

Most customers you open already show **Active**, because a portal is active by default once a customer's account is active. You only see the "no portal yet" state, and the launch flow, for a customer whose account is not active.

### Where you see it

The badge appears next to the customer name in the header, and again at the top of the Portal tab.
