# Edit the serial number or asset name

Use this when a serial number was recorded wrong, or you want to give an asset a friendlier name than its serial.

### Before you begin

You need editing access to this asset's organization. If you do not see the pencil icon next to the serial number, ask your administrator.

> **Screenshot placeholder:** the **Edit Asset Details** modal with the Serial Number and Asset Name fields filled in.

### Steps

1. Click the pencil icon next to the serial number in the header. The **Edit Asset Details** modal opens, showing the current serial and name.
2. Update the **Serial Number** field, the **Asset Name** field, or both.
3. Click **Save**. The modal closes and the header updates with the new values.

### What you see

* **Save** stays disabled until you change at least one field and the serial number is not blank.
* If you clear the **Asset Name** field and save, Signal uses the serial number as the name instead of leaving it blank.
* Signal only sends the fields you actually changed.

### Notes

* Signal does not check whether a serial number is already in use as you type. If you save a serial that another active asset already uses in your organization, the save fails and shows an error saying the serial already exists. Change the value and try again.
* If a save fails for another reason, the error message appears under the fields. Click **Cancel** or the **×** to close the modal without saving.
