# Duplicate an asset from its detail page

Duplicate an asset when a customer has a second, near-identical unit and you want to start from the existing record instead of entering everything again.

### Before you begin

You need Signal access to this asset's organization. If **Duplicate** does not appear in the **⋯** menu, ask your administrator.

### Steps

1. Click the **⋯** menu in the header, then click **Duplicate**.
2. In most cases Signal creates the copy immediately, with no extra dialog. A confirmation message tells you the new serial number.

### How Signal names the copy

Signal proposes a new serial by adding "-COPY" to the original, for example `TX-400-COPY`. If that serial is already used by another active asset, Signal keeps adding "-COPY" until it finds one that is free. If the original asset had a name, the copy's name gets "(Copy)" added to it.

### When you are asked to confirm

If the proposed serial is used only by an archived asset, Signal shows a **Confirm duplicate serial** dialog instead of creating the copy right away:

1. Review the suggested serial number, prefilled in the **New Serial Number** field.
2. Keep it as is, or edit it to avoid confusion with the archived record.
3. Click **Duplicate**.

### Notes

* The new asset is created as active, even if you duplicated an archived asset.
* Signal does not take you to the new asset after duplicating it. Find it from Empire View or search by its serial number.
