# Change an asset's operating status

Change an asset's status when its operating condition changes, for example when a unit goes offline or is pulled from service.

### Before you begin

You need editing access to this asset's organization. If **Change status** does not appear in the **⋯** menu, ask your administrator.

### The six statuses

| Status             | Meaning                                        |
| ------------------ | ---------------------------------------------- |
| Online             | Available and operating normally               |
| Offline            | Unavailable or not currently operating         |
| Out of Service     | Intentionally removed from active service      |
| Abandoned in Place | Retired equipment that remains at its location |
| Removed            | Removed from the tracked installation          |
| Unknown            | Operating status has not been confirmed        |

Signal places no restrictions on which status you can change to from which. Any status can move to any other.

### Steps

1. Click the **⋯** menu in the header, then click **Change status**.
2. In the **Change Status** dialog, click the status you want.
3. Click **Update Status**. The button shows "Updating…" while it saves.
4. The dialog closes, the header badge updates, and a confirmation message appears.

### Notes

* **Update Status** stays disabled until you pick an option.
* Press Esc or click **Cancel** to close the dialog without changing anything, as long as it is not already saving.
* If the update fails, the error appears under the status options and the dialog stays open so you can try again.
