# Edit a user's permissions

Change what a user can do inside their own organization by editing their permissions.

Who can do this: Zephyr staff only.

### Before you begin

Find the user first. See [Find a user and read their record](/administration-zephyr-staff/user-management-tab/find-a-user-and-read-their-record.md).

### Steps

1. With a user selected, find the **Permissions** section.
2. Click a permission pill to turn it on or off. On pills are highlighted.
3. To add a permission that is not one of the pills, such as **create**, type it in the **Custom permission** field and click **Add**. It appears as its own pill, and clicking it removes it.
4. Click **Save changes**.

### What you see

A message confirms the save: **Saved user permissions and products.** If you also changed products, see [Grant products to a user (Elevate)](/administration-zephyr-staff/user-management-tab/grant-products-to-a-user-elevate.md) for what that message looks like when a product removal is involved.

### Permission pills

| Pill        | What it allows                                                                                        |
| ----------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| read        | Read-only access, informational only; no control in Signal is gated on it alone.                      |
| write       | Informational only; no control in Signal is gated on it alone.                                        |
| edit        | Change status, edit serial number, reassign customer, and other edit actions on assets and customers. |
| delete      | Archive assets. Signal has no hard delete; this is what "delete" means today.                         |
| admin panel | Change the Account Owner on a customer.                                                               |
| promote     | Move an asset from draft to active, and restore an archived asset.                                    |

### Notes

* The **create** permission, which controls adding new assets and bulk import, is not one of the six pills. Add it as a **Custom permission**.
* Saving replaces the user's entire permissions list with what is currently shown. Turning a pill off removes that permission immediately on save.
