# Rename an organization's short name

Rename an organization's short name. Use this when a customer's short name no longer matches its current business name, or was set up wrong.

Who can do this: staff admin only.

### Why short names matter

An organization's short name is a unique slug. Signal uses it as the phrase you must type to confirm every other high-impact action on that organization: upgrading products, offboarding, reactivating, and merging. Changing it changes what staff will need to type for those actions going forward.

### Before you begin

Find the organization first. See [Find an organization](/administration-zephyr-staff/organizations-tab/find-an-organization.md).

### Steps

1. With the organization loaded, find **Short name** in the overview.
2. Edit the value in the text field. The **Rename** button stays disabled while the field is empty or unchanged.
3. Click **Rename**.
4. In the confirmation dialog, type the organization's current short name exactly as shown, case-sensitive, then click **Rename** again.

### What you see

A confirmation message shows the new short name once the rename completes, and the overview updates to match.

### Notes

* The dialog asks for the organization's current short name, not the new one you are setting.
* If you do not have staff admin, this field shows as read-only text and cannot be changed.
